Augsburg believes it has been called to be an asset to our community and neighborhood.
What does it mean to be an asset to our community and neighborhood? In truth, we are still working this out. But what we do know is, when we are doing it right it looks like:
- Accepting God's diversity as we move toward full inclusion
- Sharing the good news of Jesus' teachings
- Serving our neighbors
- Encouraging bold faith wherever we find it
- Telling God's story, our story, and the stories of others
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is an open and affirming denomination.
Each individual church within the ELCA gets to decide their response to the denominational stances. In the mid-2010's Augsburg's members voted to not allow the pastor of Augsburg to preside over same sex marriages. As time has gone on, more people have questioned that vote and in 2021 we began the process of becoming a Reconciled in Christ (RIC) community (you can read more about RIC here).
The work of becoming an RIC church is a long road, but the leadership of Augsburg is committed to finishing it and becoming a fully integrated RIC community. We had to pause the RIC process mid 2021, but we will be resuming it in 2022. We want to be a community that when we say "all are welcome" all are actually welcome on every level.
